Cultures in the laboratory: mapping similarities and differences between Māori and non-Māori in engaging with gene-editing technologies in Aotearoa, New Zealand

Abstract Public engagement on rapidly advancing gene-editing technologies requires attention not merely to science and economics, but also culture. In focusing the similarities differences between Indigenous non-Indigenous perspectives new emerging genetic technologies, this article reports a national survey in Aotearoa New Zealand among stratified random sample of an equal number Māori non-Māori participants. Identifying approaches experimentation, use, potential commercialization moves along continuum nuanced cultural insights into gene editing for purposes ranging from human medical treatments food production conservation native species plants animals pest eradication. The development typologies using K-means cluster analysis reveals public’s complex responses modification as well editing. signals how recognizing diversity values can help shape robust policy design use regulation variety sectors contexts.
